Using Collage to Inspire Learning:
a playful workshop for parents and educators

AGES: Adults

Saturday November 9, 2024
10:00 - 11:30am (90 minutes)

This workshop will introduce parents, caregivers, and educators to the inspiring nature of collage, from a quick survey of picture book makers who use cut paper to illustrate, to its status as a no-fail artistic endeavor – as well as a prompt for storytelling and a means for parsing the creative process.

The session will allow time for three skill-building collage projects and include a range of materials, paper-shaping techniques, and tips on using glue!

Class Fee: $40 + HST

Paper, Scissors & Glue: a playful workshop for young artists

AGES: Grades 2 - 7
PRIMARY & JUNIOR

Saturday November 9, 2024
1:00 - 2:15pm (
75 minutes)

A picture book is often a child’s first experience with art. What better way to appreciate the images created by artists than to create them oneself? So much of the artistic process is about selection – what and where to put things on the page. Collage is the ideal first medium because of its flexibility.

This workshop will offer three hands-on projects; two simple warm-up exercises to learn gluing and paper-shaping techniques and then a more complex self-portrait that will challenge young artists to improve their skills, focus on choosing the right materials, and think about how best to express themselves visually.

Class Fee: $35 + HST

I was born in Toronto a long time ago. When I was a kid, I made strange puppets and little creatures and clothes for my dolls. When I grew up, I made little puppets and strange creatures and clothes for my children, as well as collage pictures and stories that eventually became books. I used scissors for all these things. I named my art studio Scissorhouse.

When I got older, I moved from Canada to live in New York City. I had a couple of children and told them stories. We imagined adventures that kids might have in the big, busy city and anywhere else. Eventually I began to write the stories down, and sometimes make pictures to go along with them.

Now I live in Canada again. My daughters live in New York City.

All of us still write stories and make pictures.
